Tutoring
PURPOSE
Out of our desire to serve the needs of our congregation and local community, Wesley Chapel United Methodist Church has begun a Tutoring Ministry. It exists to provide free weekly tutoring to students and their families in need of academic help and who are willing to commit to a weekly meeting schedule.
SCHEDULE
Tutoring is offered on Wednesday evenings from 3:00 until 4:30. We also offer tutoring for Grant Line Elementary students on Thursday afternoons from 2:30 until 3:30. Each session is usually an hour in length unless another arrangement is made with the parent and tutor. Tutoring will follow the New Albany Floyd County School schedule. If there is no school that day, then there will be no tutoring. If there is no school because of bad weather, there will be no tutoring. Tutoring is not offered during the summer.
SUBJECTS COVERED
Our desire is to provide school work support which includes: helping with math problems, writing papers, reading, studying chapters in books, and preparing for tests. A variety of subjects are offered. Basic study skills are also available.
TUTORING STAFF
Our tutors attend Wesley Chapel Church and are volunteers. They come from a variety of backgrounds. Some are teachers or retired teachers. Some are parents, high school, or college students who have an interest in the subject matter and a desire to help others. Some of our tutors are qualified in more than one area so if a student needs help in other subjects they may still have the same tutor. We try our best to match the student with the most qualified volunteer. All of our tutors have been screened and had a background check done by the Wesley Chapel Director of Education.
MATERIALS
Students are expected to bring their homework for tutoring time. This includes textbooks, paper, writing materials, and calculators, if needed.
TUTORING LOCATION
We tutor at the 150 Campus and Grant Line Elementary School. Rooms are available for tutoring one-on-one or in a group setting if needed .
EXPECTATIONS
We expect students and families to commit to consistently coming each Wednesday during their scheduled time. If an absence is needed due to illness or family emergency, then please contact your tutor directly. If you cannot reach your tutor, call the church office as soon as possible but no later than by 3:00, 944-2570. If a schedule change is needed, you will need to ask your tutor what other times they have available.
PARENT RESPONSIBILITIES
Make sure the student brings the necessary materials and arrives by their scheduled time. Parents should come in and talk to tutors at the end of each session so they can get a report on what was covered and if there was any work not covered.
STUDENT RESPONSIBILITIES
To bring their textbooks and materials and come ready to work.
